Image of the Week: "Historic" Parking Garage

Where: Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
When: December 2013
What: La Fonda Hotel Parking Garage across the street from the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assis
Comment: Santa Fe is well known for its special architectural requirements in the city center. This also applies to parking structures that must conform to the Santa Fe Style. Note that this parking garage is directly across the street from the historic Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assis. You be the judge of whether the parking garage mixes in well, or whether a parking garage of any architectural style should be across the street from the grand entrance to a cathedral.

Once one of the famous Harvey House's, the current building was built in 1922 and purchased by Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in 1925.

The hotel is literally located at the end of the Santa Fe Trail.

  1. I would like to know more about the Federal and State Historic Tax Credits programs and if I qualify.

  2. Geez! I've been to this exact spot many, many times taking the train from ABQ as well as driving, and this is really a tempest in a teapot. See all those cars in your photo? Where are you expecting them to park? Virtually ALL the architecture in Santa Fe is faux "historical." It's like Santa Barbara that way. Santa Fe is one of the most delightful, walkable cities in the US. Enjoy it. There's problems out there but this isn't one of them.

  3. The current building was not built in 1922. And, as mentioned in another comment, cars need somewhere to park. Our nation is very reliant on their personal vehicles, not to mention Santa Fe's public transit system isn't exactly phenomenal. Parking garages are a necessity, albeit sometimes unfortunate. This particular garage, built in the mid-1980s, does do an okay job keeping in line with the historic Santa Fe Style.
